Waste Recycling & Ecosystem Development Training in Japan

Japan continues to advance selective, high-performance recycling technologies aimed at achieving Zero Waste — separating and processing waste streams with a level of precision and efficiency that few countries have matched.

Japan is also home to the Fukuoka Method, a semi-aerobic landfill technology that combines low cost, high efficiency, and high safety, and has since been adopted at landfill sites around the world. This program introduces both the technologies themselves and the policies and community-collaboration frameworks that make them work in practice.

Our Approach

ABITAD is a newly established company, and we are still building our own track record as an organization. At the same time, our team brings hands-on professional experience — developed prior to founding ABITAD — in designing and delivering training related to waste recycling, ecosystem development, and landfill technologies including the Fukuoka Method. We draw on this experience, together with ABITAD’s network of Japanese public institutions, subject-matter experts, and program partners, to design training programs tailored to each delegation’s objectives. We welcome inquiries to discuss how we can support your organization’s training needs.

Program Format

Programs are customized based on each delegation’s objectives and can include the following components. Extensive site visits are central to this program.

Technology & Innovation

  • Introduction to selective, high-performance recycling technologies aimed at Zero Waste
  • Overview of the Fukuoka Method, a semi-aerobic landfill technology valued for its low cost, high efficiency, and high safety
  • How these technologies have been adapted and adopted in recycling and landfill projects worldwide

Policy & Community Collaboration

  • National and local policy frameworks that support recycling and waste-reduction initiatives
  • Models for resident and community collaboration, including separated-waste collection systems
  • Discussions with Japanese practitioners on building public support for waste and ecosystem programs

Site Visits

  • Hands-on visits to recycling facilities and landfill sites employing the Fukuoka Method
  • Visits to communities and local governments implementing collaborative waste-reduction systems
  • Direct engagement with the technical staff and local stakeholders who operate these systems day to day

Why Japan, Why ABITAD

Japan has developed some of the world’s most advanced waste recycling and landfill technologies, including the Fukuoka Method — a semi-aerobic landfill technology that originated in Fukuoka and has since been adopted around the world for its low cost, high efficiency, and high safety. ABITAD works with clients to translate this technical experience, together with the policy frameworks and community-collaboration models that support it, into training that fits each organization’s context and goals.
